A 21-year-old man from West Dunbartonshire has been found guilty of developing and selling a computer program capable of bringing down websites, following a lengthy and intricate cybercrime investigation by Police Scotland.

Amar Tagore, who hails from Alexandria, was arrested after authorities uncovered his involvement in creating a tool used to launch Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks on commercial systems. These attacks are notorious for causing websites to crash and widespread disruption to online services.

Tagore’s online tool was not only used by him but also sold to hundreds of customers worldwide, whom he provided with technical support. This cybercriminal operation resulted in Tagore making tens of thousands of pounds through the sales of his malicious software.

Following his arrest, Tagore pled guilty to the charges brought against him at Dumbarton Sheriff Court. He is now awaiting sentencing, which is set to take place at a later date.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Maclean, who leads Police Scotland’s Cybercrime Investigations Unit, shed light on the intricate nature of the case. He emphasized the significance of the thorough digital forensic examination that played a crucial role in uncovering Tagore’s illicit activities.

Furthermore, DCI Maclean highlighted the collaboration between domestic and international partners in the investigation, underscoring the global reach of cybercrime. This case serves as a reminder of the pervasive nature of cyber threats that transcend traditional borders, necessitating a united front in combating such criminal activities.

In response to this incident, Police Scotland reaffirmed its commitment to tackling cybercrime at all levels to safeguard communities and businesses from the detrimental effects of such malicious behavior. They urged individuals with concerns or information regarding cybercrime to reach out to the authorities through the dedicated channels provided.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats and the critical importance of cybersecurity measures to protect against such malicious activities. It underscores the necessity for continuous vigilance and collaboration among law enforcement agencies, cybersecurity experts, and the public to combat cybercrime effectively.

As technology continues to advance, the threat of cybercrime looms larger than ever, making it imperative for individuals and organizations to prioritize cybersecurity and take proactive steps to safeguard their digital assets. By remaining vigilant and staying informed about the latest cybersecurity threats, we can collectively work towards creating a safer and more secure online environment for all.
