Mozilla, a popular web browser, has been facing scrutiny over its continued partnership with Onerep, a personal data removal service, despite revelations about its founder’s questionable ties to people-search companies. In mid-March 2024, KrebsOnSecurity exposed that the CEO and founder of Onerep, Dimitri Shelest, had launched numerous people-search services, including Nuwber, a data broker that sells background reports on individuals.

The investigation into Shelest’s connections raised concerns about the integrity of Onerep’s commitment to online security and privacy. Despite Shelest’s assertion that Nuwber had no information-sharing with Onerep, the revelation prompted Mozilla to announce the discontinuation of its partnership with Onerep. However, nearly a year later, Mozilla is still promoting Onerep to Firefox users as part of its subscription service, Mozilla Monitor Plus.

The prolonged partnership between Mozilla and Onerep has sparked questions about the ethical considerations involved in data privacy and personal information protection. While Mozilla initially expressed concerns about the alignment of Onerep’s CEO’s activities with their values, the search for a new provider has been delayed, leading to Onerep’s continued involvement in providing services to Firefox users.

Despite ongoing efforts to find a replacement partner that aligns with Mozilla’s values, the association between Onerep and problematic people-search services like Radaris raises further doubts about the personal data removal industry. Radaris, known for disregarding opt-out requests and promoting questionable data practices, has been actively endorsing Onerep to individuals seeking to remove their personal information from online databases.

The complex web of relationships between data removal services and data brokers highlights the challenges faced by consumers in safeguarding their online privacy. As the demand for personal data removal and protection grows, companies like Onerep and Radaris play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of data privacy and security.

In conclusion, the ongoing partnership between Mozilla and Onerep underscores the complexities of the personal data removal industry and the challenges associated with finding alternatives that prioritize user privacy and security. As technology continues to evolve, the need for transparent and ethical data practices remains paramount in safeguarding individuals’ online information.
