The cybersecurity world was left in disbelief upon hearing the news of the passing of Amit Yoran, a prominent figure in the industry known for his leadership roles at major cybersecurity companies such as Tenable, RSA Security, and NetWitness. Yoran, who was also the founding director of the US Department of Homeland Security’s US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) program, passed away on January 3 at the age of 54 after battling cancer since March 2024. He had taken a medical leave of absence on December 5 to focus on his treatment.
Amit Yoran made significant contributions to the cybersecurity field throughout his career. He served as the chairman and CEO of Tenable Holdings starting in 2016, guiding the company through substantial growth leading up to its successful $250 million IPO on Nasdaq in 2018. Under Yoran’s leadership, Tenable’s value increased from $2.1 billion at the time of the IPO to $4.69 billion. In 2022, Tenable launched Tenable One, a comprehensive security solution that integrated vulnerability management, external attack surface management, identity management, and cloud security.
Tenable released a statement mourning the loss of Yoran, highlighting his impact as a visionary, leader, colleague, mentor, brother, father, and friend. The company acknowledged the shock of his passing and urged everyone to take the time to process the difficult loss. Before his tenure at Tenable, Yoran had served as the president of RSA Security and founded NetWitness, a threat detection and response platform, which was later acquired by RSA Security. Additionally, he co-founded RIPtech, a managed security services provider acquired by Symantec in 2002.

Yoran’s influence extended to his family, as both of his brothers, Dov and Elad, are also involved in cybersecurity. Dov Yoran, a former Cisco executive, paid tribute to his late brother as a hero who had touched many lives in profound ways. Amit Yoran’s legacy as a leader and innovator in the cybersecurity industry will be remembered by many, including those at Dark Reading, where he was regarded as a friend who generously shared his expertise and insight over the years. His passing leaves a void in the cybersecurity community, but his contributions will continue to inspire future generations in the field.
