Features such as not allowing privileged runtime access and preventing user targeting show that Apple is considering potential abuse cases. The company has detailed a five-step approach to strengthen privacy and security for the platform, with most of the processing done on a user’s device using Apple Silicon. More complex queries will be sent to Apple’s private cloud and utilize the services of OpenAI and its large language model (LLM).

Apple has made security a centerpiece of its approach to integrating GenAI, particularly with its Personal Intelligence System that connects data from applications in a new way. Every message and email sent from a device could potentially be reviewed by AI and have context added through on-device semantic indexes. The data never leaves the device in most cases and is anonymized, as stated by Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple.

Despite Apple’s efforts to enhance security and privacy, there are still concerns about the complexity of interactions between apps and data on mobile devices and the behavior of LLMs. Steve Wilson, chief privacy officer at Exabeam, points out that the threats related to LLMs are not fully understood, and some may slip through Apple’s security measures. Wilson highlights the need for more controls to regulate data going into and out of Apple Intelligence, especially in the absence of clear policies and integration with existing security controls.

As companies experiment with integrating GenAI into the workplace to boost productivity, Apple’s approach with Apple Intelligence sets a high standard in terms of security and privacy.
