Arelion Enhances DDoS Protection Through Strategic Partnership with NETSCOUT

Arelion, recognized for operating the most robust IP fiber backbone globally, has been a pivotal provider of high-capacity transit services for many leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and prominent enterprises around the world. The company prides itself on delivering an exceptional customer experience across 129 countries and boasts global Internet services that connect over 700 cloud, security, and content providers with low-latency transit solutions. Arelion’s private Cloud Connect service facilitates direct connections to major cloud service platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, and Oracle Cloud across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Facing the Challenge

In its pursuit of bolstering security measures and enhancing its DDoS protection infrastructure, Arelion sought the expertise of NETSCOUT®, a provider well-versed in DDoS protection for more than 16 years. Arelion aimed to dissect and analyze the efficiency of their existing infrastructure, understanding its contributions to their internal security strategy and the protection measures in place for their clientele. The collaboration with NETSCOUT facilitated a comprehensive assessment of Arelion’s DDoS protection landscape and the efficiency of their current tools.

The process initiated with NETSCOUT delivering detailed insights into the existing product infrastructure and configuration. Armed with this information, Arelion’s project manager led an investigative initiative focused on identifying new developments and solutions within the DDoS protection space. The primary goal of this exercise was to boost the effectiveness of DDoS defenses, both internally and for their customer base, in the face of escalating cyber threats.

Scott Nichols, the Chief Commercial Officer at Arelion, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “As a Tier-1 Internet carrier supporting the majority of global Internet traffic, this continued collaboration reflects our ongoing investment in best-of-breed network security solutions to protect the technology ecosystem.”

Implementing the Solution

Following their comprehensive review of DDoS protection capabilities, NETSCOUT initiated discussions about potential enhancements. Arelion was introduced to three new offerings designed to significantly elevate its DDoS protection measures: Sentinel, the ATLAS Intelligence Feed (AIF), and Adaptive DDoS Protection (ADP).

The first product, Sentinel, acts as an add-on to Arelion’s existing Sightline tool. With Sentinel, Arelion can leverage the capabilities of routers and other security devices within their multi-vendor infrastructure, ensuring optimized defense orchestration during DDoS attacks. This technology facilitates the automatic mitigation of attacks, regardless of complexity, by distributing the mitigation load, ultimately enhancing the resilience of the entire system.

Next, Arelion was presented with the ATLAS Intelligence Feed (AIF) for Threat Mitigation System (TMS). This offering harnesses some of the most sophisticated threat intelligence available, enabling Arelion to enhance its DDoS detection capabilities across its network. With cyber threats becoming increasingly complex, having curated threat intelligence becomes crucial. NETSCOUT’s monitoring of over 50% of global internet traffic and its AI-driven analysis processes facilitate a proactive response to emerging DDoS tactics and methodologies.

The third innovative solution introduced was Adaptive DDoS Protection (ADP), which significantly integrates automation into Arelion’s defense strategy. By employing AI-driven intelligence during attack detection and classification, ADP tailors optimal mitigation strategies in real-time, maintaining effectiveness as attack vectors evolve. This proactive and automated approach not only streamlines protection processes but also enhances security operations against increasingly sophisticated DDoS threats.

Results of the Partnership

Thanks to this expanded partnership with NETSCOUT, Arelion has witnessed a marked increase in visibility within its network infrastructure. This newfound visibility is not just a metric of success; it translates into enhanced protection for both Arelion’s internal systems and the critical applications of its customers. The partnership empowers Arelion to adopt a diverse range of clients, solidifying their position as a trustworthy provider capable of meeting the needs of large service providers and multi-homed enterprises alike.

Darren Anstee, chief security technologist at NETSCOUT, underscored the urgency for enhanced protection for sectors such as finance, government, and utilities, which are vulnerable to rising cybersecurity risks. He pointed out that the increased frequency and sophistication of DDoS attacks highlight the necessity for comprehensive and robust DDoS protection measures.

A Commitment to Security

Arelion firmly believes that to provide resilient and trusted DDoS protection for its customers, two critical elements are necessary: collaborating with a leading DDoS defense provider like NETSCOUT and demonstrating confidence in the selected solutions by implementing them internally. This strategic alliance ultimately assures Arelion and its clients that their infrastructures are safeguarded by industry-leading DDoS protection solutions.
