Australian Spycatchers Capture Married Russian Operatives

An Australian Defence Force (ADF) army private, Kira Korolev, and her husband, Igor Korolev, have been arrested and charged with spying for Russia in a covert operation named BURGAZADA. The couple, who have resided in Australia for over ten years, was apprehended at their residence in Brisbane on July 11 and is now facing serious charges of espionage, which carry a maximum penalty of 15 years behind bars.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) assured the public that there is no ongoing threat following the arrest of the Korolevs. However, it was revealed that the couple had been collaborating to obtain sensitive information from the ADF to pass on to Russian authorities.

According to reports, Kira Korolev made multiple trips to Russia while on extended leave from the ADF. During her visits, she allegedly instructed her husband to access her official work account and extract confidential data to send to her personal email. The AFP claims that Igor Korolev used his wife’s ADF credentials on several occasions to retrieve sensitive information for the benefit of the Kremlin.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw addressed the severity of the situation, stating that espionage is a grave offense, especially in a time of global turmoil where state actors are intensifying their efforts to gain access to classified information held by Western democracies like Australia.

This incident marks only the third instance since 1995 where individuals have been charged by the AFP with espionage or foreign interference offenses.
