Congress leader Partap Bajwa’s defiance against the Mohali police station on Tuesday night made headlines as he emerged after a grueling six-hour interrogation, vowing to continue fighting for Punjab. Labeling the questioning as a “sustained interrogation,” Bajwa accused the state’s AAP government of targeting him in what he deemed as “political vendetta.”
In his statement to the media, Bajwa expressed his indignation at being summoned to the police station, portraying it as an insult to the constitutional position he holds. He further alleged that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was unable to handle his criticism regarding the current law and order situation in the state, hence resorting to such tactics against him.
“We underwent a sustained interrogation. We responded firmly… I was interrogated for six hours,” Bajwa disclosed to reporters after his ordeal. He also expressed gratitude for the “overwhelming” support he received from fellow Congress leaders and workers following the FIR registration against him.
Prior to his appearance at the Cyber Crime Police Station, Bajwa was accompanied by senior Congress leaders and faced vocal protest from party members who gathered outside the station. Congress state president Amarinder Raja Warring emphasized that the issue wasn’t limited to Bajwa alone but represented the stance of the entire Punjab Congress against what they perceived as Chief Minister Mann’s autocratic behavior.
Punjab Police had summoned Bajwa over his controversial “50 bombs in Punjab” statement which led to the filing of a case against him on Sunday, prompting a legal battle that escalated when the Congress leader sought recourse at the Punjab and Haryana High Court to have the FIR quashed. Bajwa’s counsel, senior advocate APS Deol, asserted that the charges against his client were groundless and petitioned for their dismissal.
The case against Bajwa was registered under Sections 197(1)(d) and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to spreading false and misleading information that undermines the country’s sovereignty and unity, and inciting enmity and ill will. Despite facing legal challenges, Bajwa stood firm in his claims and committed to cooperating with the authorities in resolving the matter.
Amid the legal battle, political tensions escalated with AAP party state president Aman Arora and other leaders staging a protest demanding Bajwa’s arrest in the case.
