In a recent development, the Bangalore City Police conducted a Cybercrime Awareness Seminar at Trilife Hospital, Kalyan Nagar, to educate the public on the growing threat of cybercrime and provide ways to protect themselves from fraudsters. The seminar, organized as part of Karnataka Police’s Cyber Awareness Month, featured speakers such as Mr. Umashankar, ACP, Banaswadi Police Station, Mr. Laxmikant, ACP, Cyber Police Station East Bengaluru, and Mr. Arun Solanki, Inspector, Banaswadi Police Station. They shed light on the alarming rise in cybercrime incidents in Karnataka and underscored the crucial role of awareness in combatting this issue.
Recent statistics reveal a significant surge in cybercrime cases in Karnataka, with a staggering 20,875 cases recorded in 2024 alone, resulting in financial losses amounting to Rs 2,047 crore. Bengaluru city stood out as the hotspot for such incidents, with 16,357 cases reported up until November 2024.
Mr. Umashankar emphasized the need for public awareness, stating, “Cybercriminals are evolving in their methods, making it imperative for the public to stay informed about the latest tactics used by fraudsters. Awareness serves as the first line of defense. Contrary to popular belief, cybercrime is not limited to financial transactions but also extends to various platforms such as dating apps, matrimonial sites, adult sites, and honey traps. Only a small percentage of individuals targeted by cybercriminals are able to extricate themselves from such schemes.”
To protect against digital arrest scams, individuals were advised to refrain from sharing personal or financial information with unknown callers. In these deceitful ploys, fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials, often from agencies like the CBI or the ED, and coerce victims into transferring funds to avoid fabricated charges of money laundering or terrorism.
Mr. Laxmikant stressed the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding against cyber threats, including using strong, unique passwords and enabling two-factor authentication for online accounts. He also highlighted the significance of exercising caution with suspicious emails and links, installing and updating antivirus software, and conducting regular cybersecurity training for employees.
Mr. Arun Solanki further advised individuals to be cautious with online personal information, avoid sharing sensitive details with unknown sources, verify the authenticity of communication from reputed organizations, limit sharing personal information on social media, and refrain from using public Wi-Fi networks for sensitive online activities. Regular monitoring of bank statements and credit reports for unauthorized activities was also encouraged.
Dr. Shafiq AM, CEO and Co-Founder of Trilife Hospital, expressed gratitude to the Bengaluru Police for selecting their venue for the seminar and praised their dedication to raising awareness about cybercrime. The seminar concluded with a Q&A session, allowing attendees to seek advice on protecting themselves from cyber threats.
Overall, the seminar served as a valuable initiative in educating the public about the prevalence of cybercrime and equipping them with essential knowledge to safeguard against such fraudulent activities. With the support of the community and continued vigilance, efforts to combat cybercrime can be further strengthened.
