Cyber fraudsters have once again found a new way to deceive individuals, this time using New Year wishes as a means of ensnaring their victims. The cyber police have issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant, especially those who use Android smartphones, as they are at a higher risk of falling prey to these scams.

The modus operandi of the fraudsters involves sending APK files disguised as New Year greetings via messaging apps such as WhatsApp. Once the unsuspecting victim installs the file on their mobile device, their entire phone becomes compromised. Every action taken on the device becomes visible to the cybercriminals, including sensitive information such as passwords and personal details.

One of the recent tactics employed by these cyber fraudsters was to send out APK files disguised as wedding invitations during the wedding season. Individuals who fell for the trick ended up having their bank accounts depleted, as the fraudsters were able to gain access to their UPI apps and withdraw funds.

The cyber police are advising individuals to be cautious when receiving any unfamiliar links or files via messaging apps. It is essential not to click on any suspicious links and to refrain from downloading any files from unknown sources. If you do happen to fall victim to online fraud, it is crucial to act swiftly and file a complaint by calling 1930 within 24 hours of the cybercrime. By reporting the incident promptly, victims may have a chance to receive a refund.

Furthermore, individuals can also seek help by filing a complaint at the nearest cyber police station. It is important to take immediate action in such situations to prevent further loss of funds and personal information.

As cyber fraudsters continue to evolve and adapt their tactics, it is crucial for the public to stay informed and vigilant against such scams. By being aware of the risks and taking necessary precautions, individuals can protect themselves from falling victim to cyber fraud during festive seasons like the New Year.
