BBC Breach Endangers 25,000 Pension Scheme Members

The BBC recently fell victim to a data breach that exposed the personal information of 25,000 current and former employees, including members of its pension scheme. The compromised information included names, national insurance numbers, dates of birth, gender, and home addresses of the affected individuals. Additionally, the broadcaster stated that upon analysis by its specialists, it was determined that the stolen files had not been misused.

The BBC assured its members that the source of the incident has been secured and that investigations are ongoing. They are also in the process of notifying those impacted by the breach.

According to Ted Cowell, head of cybersecurity at S-RM, there is currently no evidence to suggest that this was a ransomware attack. Cowell believes the issue may stem from a misconfiguration that inadvertently exposed the data, rather than a deliberate attempt to steal and hold data for ransom.
