Leading passwordless authentication provider Beyond Identity has unveiled its latest tool, The Passkey Journey. The free tool is designed to assist development and user experience (UX) teams in understanding, planning, and optimizing various end-user authentication experiences.

The Passkey Journey aims to address the challenges associated with passkey adoption and offers insights into the pain points of UX inconsistencies across different browsers and devices. By implementing just a few lines of code, the tool provides valuable clarity for development teams.

Passkeys offer a highly secure and user-friendly alternative to passwords, enabling users to utilize their device biometrics, such as fingerprints or facial identification, or a PIN or pattern. These passkeys are built on FIDO standards and are tied to a user account and a registered website or app. However, the usability of passkeys depends on the browser and device being used, as well as whether they support the WebAuthn protocol.

The complexity of browser support for passkeys, often referred to as the “browser dilemma,” has created challenges for development teams in terms of UX impact, implementation lift, and passkey deployment strategy. To address these challenges, The Passkey Journey offers a JavaScript snippet that can be integrated into a website. This snippet analyzes visitors’ browsers and devices, determining WebAuthn support and providing a dynamic report on the user base’s ability to use passkeys.

The report generated by The Passkey Journey offers a detailed breakdown, showing the percentage of website visitors who can use passkeys with biometrics only, with only security keys, or who cannot use passkeys at all. Additionally, the report includes clickable UX flows to provide context for each UX scenario and offers deployment recommendations to optimize the rollout of passkeys, bridge the technical gaps, and enable more users to utilize passkeys.

Jasson Casey, CTO of Beyond Identity, emphasized the importance of passkeys in the authentication landscape, highlighting their ability to offer a frictionless and secure solution. However, the rapid evolution of platforms presents a challenge for development teams striving for consistent user experiences across browsers and devices. Casey expressed excitement over the introduction of The Passkey Journey, describing it as a simple tool that enables teams to quickly comprehend their users’ ability to utilize passkeys for authentication and make informed deployment decisions.

The Passkey Journey provides development and UX teams with a free and transformative tool, empowering them to gain greater visibility into their user base’s readiness for passkeys. By leveraging this tool, teams can better understand the differences in device and browser support for WebAuthn, design passkeys more efficiently, forecast UX impact accurately, and integrate passkeys with greater confidence and speed.

Andrew Shikiar, Executive Director and CMO of the FIDO Alliance, commended Beyond Identity’s contribution to the alliance’s efforts to resolve deployment challenges surrounding passkeys. Shikiar expressed confidence in The Passkey Journey, stating that it is a valuable development tool that will help enterprises make informed decisions regarding their passkey deployments.

To encourage adoption, Beyond Identity is offering The Passkey Journey for free, with no account or credit card needed. The company has positioned itself as a revolutionary force in digital access, prioritizing cybersecurity and delivering robust solutions to protect organizations against cyberattacks. Their suite of passwordless, phishing-resistant, and Zero Trust Authentication solutions enhances security while providing a seamless user experience. By continuously assessing risks based on signals from the zero trust ecosystem, Beyond Identity ensures that only authorized users with secure devices are granted access to critical resources.
