The decision to choose Malaysia as the location for the BlackBerry APAC HQ is in line with the company’s strategic vision of capitalizing on the country’s proximity to emerging tech hubs and robust government infrastructure. This move comes on the heels of a cybersecurity partnership formed with the Malaysian government, cemented by a cybersecurity agreement signed in November 2023.
The collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) resulted in the creation of the Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (CCoE), a state-of-the-art training facility designed to enhance Malaysia’s cybersecurity workforce’s skills. Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications Minister, expressed strong support for the BlackBerry APAC HQ establishment in Malaysia, highlighting the advanced cybersecurity solutions that BlackBerry brings to the region. BlackBerry’s commitment to cybersecurity education and capacity building in Malaysia was further underscored by its recognition at Malaysia’s Cyber Security Awards 2024, where it received the Cyber Security (Service) Innovation accolade. Additionally, a partnership with the International Information System Security Certification Consortium (ISC2) was announced on October 23, 2024, to provide globally recognized cybersecurity training and certifications at the CCoE.
Han Ther Lee, Director of Education and Training at the CCoE, emphasized the importance of the partnership with ISC2 in preparing Malaysia’s cybersecurity workforce for the challenges ahead. The courses offered, such as Certified Information Systems Security Professionals (CISSP) and Certified Cloud Security Professionals (CCSP), are essential for bolstering national and regional cybersecurity capabilities.
Cigdem Bildirici, Vice President of Business Development at ISC2, highlighted the critical need to enhance the cybersecurity workforce amid the growing digital connectivity and associated risks in Malaysia. Since its establishment, the CCoE has trained over 1,500 professionals, dedicating more than 8,000 hours to skill development. With the addition of ISC2 programs, the center is poised for significant expansion to meet the increasing demand for cybersecurity skills.
