Aubrey Cottle, a 37-year-old Canadian, has recently found himself in legal trouble after being arrested in Ontario for his alleged involvement in hacking the Texas Republican Party’s systems. The U.S. Justice Department has unsealed a complaint outlining how Cottle gained unauthorized access to Epik, a hosting company utilized by the party. It is reported that Cottle managed to download a backup of the Texas Grand Old Party’s web server, which contained sensitive personal information, and then proceeded to make this data publicly available online. His actions were publicly claimed on social media platforms such as Discord and TikTok, where he took credit for the breach.

Known by his online alias “Kirtaner,” Cottle is recognized as a prominent hacker and a member of the Anonymous collective. Authorities have alleged that he defaced the Texas Republican Party website in 2021, citing the attack as a response to Texas’ controversial abortion law. This breach led to the creation of a now-defunct website housing stolen data from Epik dating back several decades. Cottle’s reported activities have predominantly targeted conservative organizations, with his past admission of involvement in various high-profile hacks against different entities.

Subsequent to Cottle’s arrest, Canadian law enforcement reportedly seized 20 terabytes of stolen data from his electronic devices. The investigation into his actions has been spearheaded by the FBI Austin Cyber Task Force, with valuable support from the Ontario Provincial Police and Durham Regional Police Service. Cottle is facing serious federal charges for unlawfully transferring, possessing, or utilizing identifying information with the intent to engage in illegal activities. If found guilty, he could potentially face up to five years in prison, as indicated in the criminal complaint lodged in the Western District of Texas.

Cottle’s history of targeting organizations aligned with conservative causes has not gone unnoticed. In 2022, Canadian authorities conducted a raid on his residence following his public boasts about multiple hacks targeting groups like GiveSendGo and the Freedom Convoy 2022 campaign. Despite his prior acknowledgment of cooperation with the FBI, Cottle’s ongoing hacking endeavors continue to draw considerable attention. The Justice Department has stressed that the charges leveled against him are merely allegations, and Cottle is to be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
