A cyberattack on software provider CDK Global resulted in thousands of car dealerships being forced to shut down on Wednesday, which coincided with the Juneteenth holiday, a traditionally busy day for sales. Reports indicated that the first dealerships began experiencing disruptions around 2 a.m. Eastern Time, with some completely shutting down due to the inability to access critical information, while others managed to maintain some services using paper records.

CDK Global, which serves 15,000 dealerships, issued a statement to Dark Reading stating that they had taken systems offline as a precautionary measure but had since restored them. The company emphasized that their top priority is always the security of their customers and that their actions reflected their commitment to being a trusted partner.

As the details of the supply chain cyber incident and the status of the restored systems remained unclear, experts in the field weighed in on the matter. Roger Grimes, a data-driven defense evangelist with KnownBe4, speculated that the attack was likely ransomware-related, emphasizing the importance of understanding how the cyber threat infiltrated CDK’s systems in order to prevent future incidents.

Andrew Costis, chapter lead on the adversary research team at AttackIQ, raised concerns that CDK was facing not one but two cyberattacks, leading to the shutdown of their IT systems. He warned that the repercussions of these attacks would have a significant impact on the automotive industry due to the widespread reliance on CDK software.

The disruption caused by the cyberattack on CDK Global underscored the vulnerability of supply chains to cyber threats and the importance of implementing robust cybersecurity measures. The incident served as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of overlooking cybersecurity protocols in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.

Moving forward, cybersecurity experts emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard against cyber attacks, particularly in industries where third-party vendors play a significant role. The incident also highlighted the necessity of fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness and resilience to mitigate the risks posed by evolving cyber threats.

In conclusion, the cyberattack on CDK Global and the subsequent shutdown of thousands of car dealerships served as a wake-up call for businesses to prioritize cybersecurity and adopt a proactive approach to safeguarding against potential threats. The incident underscored the interconnected nature of supply chains and the far-reaching impact that cyber attacks can have on industries and businesses. It reinforced the importance of maintaining robust cybersecurity defenses and investing in cybersecurity measures to protect against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats in today’s digital landscape.
