The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) serves as a platform for technology giants and industry leaders to unveil their latest innovations and ideas, with a particular focus on the emerging trends impacting the business world. One of the key themes at this year’s CES was the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity, a topic that is of increasing importance as cyber threats continue to evolve.

Manufacturing companies attending CES were particularly interested in how AI can enhance their cybersecurity defenses. With the manufacturing sector being the most targeted industry for cyber-attacks, the potential of AI to strengthen manufacturers’ cybersecurity capabilities has never been more crucial. AI is already being used by cybersecurity experts to identify vulnerabilities and guard against online threats. This trend is expected to continue, with AI playing a central role in predicting and preventing cyber-attacks by analyzing behavior, detecting unusual activity, and adapting threat intelligence with countermeasures.

According to IBM, the manufacturing industry saw the most cyber-attacks in 2021, surpassing even the financial services sector. Robust cybersecurity measures are essential for maintaining trust, protecting intellectual property, and ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Despite the promise of AI in enhancing cybersecurity, there are also concerns about the potential threats it poses. Some CES panelists highlighted the risk of AI being used for deepfake attacks, which are becoming more prevalent in the cybersecurity landscape. This underscores the importance of upskilling the current workforce to recognize and respond effectively to these types of attacks.

However, meeting this need for upskilling and reskilling presents challenges for many manufacturing companies, especially smaller or medium-sized ones that may lack dedicated IT teams or cybersecurity personnel. With more than 80% of manufacturing companies experiencing a labor shortage, addressing the skills gap becomes increasingly urgent. The World Economic Forum predicts that over half of all employees will need to be upskilled or reskilled by next year to adapt to the growing automation and AI trends.

Beyond cybersecurity, CES also emphasized the importance of digital modernization in enhancing supply chain logistics. The integration of new technologies, such as AI, plays a crucial role in improving supply chain resilience and cybersecurity preparedness. As companies continue to embrace digital transformation, the need for skilled employees who can leverage these technologies becomes more apparent.

The conference highlighted the importance of digital tools in driving manufacturing innovation and growth. With facilities becoming smarter and more data-driven, manufacturers must prioritize cybersecurity and digital literacy among their workforce. CES showcased the need for robust supply chain solutions that can adapt to the evolving technological landscape, emphasizing both security and agility in an increasingly digitized world.

Overall, the use of AI in cybersecurity is an evolving area that holds great promise for enhancing manufacturers’ resilience against cyber threats. As companies continue to invest in digital technologies, the need for skilled employees who can leverage AI and other tools becomes increasingly critical for maintaining competitive advantage in an ever-changing business landscape.
