As threats have become increasingly sophisticated, traditional security measures such as heavy doors, physical locks, and patrolling guards have proven to be inadequate. Intruders have adapted to circumvent these common deterrents, raising significant concerns for various industries regarding intrusion and theft.

Across the United States, retail stores grapple with staggering losses due to shrinkage, with the financial impact reaching into the billions. A concerning 81% of employees report an uptick in violence and aggression from shoplifters, creating an environment of fear in what should be a safe workplace. The construction industry mirrors these woes, with 70% of construction workers having witnessed at least one theft each year, and a dismal recovery rate of just 25% for stolen materials and equipment. Similarly, logistics hubs and healthcare facilities are not exempt from the threat of trespassing and theft, indicating that even sectors with robust security measures are vulnerable.

The ineffectiveness of physical barriers and video surveillance alone often fails to thwart crime or mitigate losses. A pervasive issue among these incidents is a lack of information distribution. Perpetrators exploit knowledge of daily routines and access protocols, leading organizations into a reactive mode where they struggle to identify vulnerabilities and assign accountability for the ensuing lapses.

In this context, digitized access management systems emerge as crucial. The implementation of digital identities and movement data significantly enhances visibility and can help organizations protect themselves from intrusion and associated threats effectively.

Understanding Break-in Patterns

While popular media often dramatizes thefts, the reality is far more mundane. Break-ins typically rely on predictable elements, such as vulnerable access points, changes in guard shifts, and easily manipulated credentials. Although retail, healthcare, and other industries face unique operational pressures, certain patterns of intrusion attempts remain consistently observable.

A common tactic used by intruders is exploiting secondary access points. Loading bays, side doors, and back doors present attractive targets because they are frequently blind spots and may be inadvertently left unlocked by employees utilizing them for convenience.

Additionally, shared or stolen credentials facilitate unauthorized access. A thief may not need to pick a lock if they can utilize a lost keycard that is still active or a shared passkey that is infrequently updated. This risk is exacerbated in environments characterized by high employee turnover, where temporary staff might retain their access, unaware of the potential security implications.

Moreover, smarter attackers are aware that a workplace’s weakest security link often lies within its people. They employ tactics such as tailgating, where the intruder closely follows an employee and enters through an opened door, or they might request that employees hold doors open for them while their hands are full.

Timing also plays a crucial role in break-in strategies. Periods of lesser scrutiny, including shift changes, late-night hours, and scheduled deliveries, can provide intruders with opportunities to gain illegal access to secure areas. In addition, traditional locks and manual processes usually fail to provide adequate evidence post-incident, making it difficult for organizations to determine the exact nature of the breach.

By tracking these elements through digitized management systems, security teams can establish a coherent timeline of events, enabling quicker responses to any attempts at unauthorized entry and allowing the formulation of more effective security policies.

Mitigating Vulnerabilities with Digital Access

Data management is increasingly becoming the backbone of effective operations, and security teams are urged to adopt this shift. Implementing digital locks and centralized management systems strengthens site security while addressing the identified patterns of intrusion attempts.

Digital access management serves to bridge security gaps by:

  1. Enhancing control over credentials:
    Access can be tailored based on employee roles and linked to secure devices like smartphones, limiting exposure to credential loss. This targeted access ensures that employees only enter areas relevant to their tasks, while also limiting the movement of intruders with stolen credentials. Each entry is logged, allowing operators to spot suspicious behavior in real time, facilitating the identification of whether an unauthorized attempt stems from forgetful staff or malicious actors.

  2. Fostering coordination between physical and digital security teams:
    By sharing data, IT and security teams can craft coordinated responses to security threats. Digitized access also helps thwart a significant portion of cyberattacks that start with unauthorized physical entry. Flexible systems, including keyless entry, intercoms, and customizable credentials, adapt to specific site needs, effectively creating a protective barrier against potential intruders while simultaneously offering seamless access for legitimate staff.

Implementation and Policy Development

The success of digital access systems relies heavily on governance. While electronic locks and credential management can significantly reduce risk, neglecting to train staff on their proper use can leave gaps in security, enabling tailgaters to exploit weaknesses.

The most effective security strategies are those that adopt a holistic approach, harmonizing technology, data, and human expertise. Given the dynamic nature of theft and intrusion, workplaces must remain agile to keep pace with evolving criminal methodologies, ensuring that their security measures are as adaptive as the threats they face.
