Cloudflare to Capitalize on Bot Traffic Surge, CEO Predicts Non-Human Internet Usage to Expand Exponentially
In a recent discussion with investors, Cloudflare’s CEO and co-founder Matthew Prince emphasized a significant shift in internet traffic dynamics, forecasting that non-human traffic could eventually outpace human usage by a staggering factor of 1,000. As the San Francisco-based cloud services firm revels in an unprecedented boom of machine-generated activity, it is rapidly evolving its business strategy to cater to this emerging landscape.
During an earnings conference call, Prince elaborated on the company’s current trajectory, highlighting that Cloudflare is engaging nearly two million new developers focused on building AI workloads on its Workers platform. "Our business model fundamentally diverges from that of traditional hyperscalers," Prince noted. He pointed out that while larger companies sell what can be likened to mere ‘boxes’—equipped with the necessary hardware and services—it is ultimately the customers’ responsibility to maximize their utility. In contrast, Cloudflare aims to boost the efficiency of every dollar spent, which could lead to sustained revenue growth.

Prince elaborated that these entities are increasingly focused on managing and securing their internet traffic while simultaneously consolidating infrastructure and controlling costs. The steep rise in non-human traffic came as a surprise to many, including Prince himself. Initially, he had anticipated that non-human traffic would surpass that of human users by the latter half of 2027. However, the company crossed this threshold much earlier than expected—this year to be precise. "If present trends persist, we project that over the next five years, non-human traffic could be as much as 1,000 times higher than human traffic," remarked Prince. Such a dramatic increase implies that human interaction may soon be considered a mere statistical ’rounding error’ in the vast realm of the internet—not due to a decline in human activity, but rather the explosive growth of machine-driven interactions.
While much of this non-human activity can be traced back to malicious denial-of-service attacks, Prince pointed out that a significant portion consists of unwanted traffic, often driven by an AI company attempting to siphon content from media platforms that rely on advertising revenue. To combat this, Cloudflare proactively blocks harmful traffic, absorbing the costs associated with these preventative measures.
In a strategic pivot, the company is contemplating the introduction of a fee structure specifically targeting AI agents. Recently, Cloudflare unveiled a digital wallet aimed at facilitating transactions in which these agents would pay a fraction of a penny for each request made. This initiative is envisioned to help cover expenses related to bandwidth, computational resources, and content consumption.
Nevertheless, Cloudflare recognizes that not all bot traffic is detrimental. To this end, the company is focusing on distinguishing between desirable and undesirable bot visits, ensuring it serves clients effectively and efficiently, particularly as the anticipated surge in online traffic materializes. "If we project that online traffic will grow a thousandfold, it becomes imperative to enhance our operational efficiency," Prince said.
Cloudflare is also dedicated to shaping the future of an ‘agentic internet.’ By providing what Prince described as "the fastest, most secure, and most cost-efficient" platform for developers endeavoring to build, deploy, and scale agentic workloads, Cloudflare is positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in this evolving field.
"You are only charged when services are actively in use," Prince explained, illustrating the flexibility engineers have to quickly deploy or retract their resources. This model has attracted both seasoned developers and smaller, independent entrepreneurs, expanding Cloudflare’s ecosystem considerably.
The surge of interest is evidenced by the engagement of various companies, including Lovable, Replit, and Base 44 at Wix, who find that their code is increasingly deployed on Cloudflare’s platform. This trend not only accelerates the company’s growth but also enhances its reputation as the go-to choice for sophisticated developers eager to push their projects into the next generation of computing innovation.
