The Director General of Police (DGP) Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao has expressed concern over the increasing number of cybercrimes in the State of Andhra Pradesh this year compared to last year. According to recent data, a total of 916 cybercrimes were reported in 2024, which is significantly higher than the 682 cases reported in 2023. This alarming rise in cybercrimes has also resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of money lost to fraudsters. In total, victims lost a staggering Rs 1,229 crore to cybercriminals, although the police were able to recover Rs 225 crore from the perpetrators. Despite the increase in cybercrimes, the rate of recovery has also improved this year.
In response to these challenges, the police department is focusing on capacity building to enhance their ability to combat cybercrimes effectively. The newly formed EAGLE (Enforcement & Guidance for Limitation and Eradication) unit has been actively working towards making the State free from drugs and narcotics substances.
During a press conference at the police headquarters, the DGP highlighted that the overall crime rate in the State has actually decreased by 5.7% this year compared to last year. A total of 92,094 cases were reported in 2024, down from 97,760 cases in 2023. This decline in crime rates can be attributed to the visible presence of police officers, which has helped deter criminal activities in the region.
The DGP praised the State police for their commendable performance in maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety. The decline in bodily crimes, property offences, crimes against women, and crimes against children is a testament to the department’s dedication to protecting the citizens of Andhra Pradesh.
Statistics also showed a decrease in crimes against women, with 24,776 cases reported this year compared to 27,551 cases last year. Additionally, cases of child abuse and crimes under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have also decreased. Furthermore, the State witnessed a 6.13% decline in road accidents, indicating an overall improvement in public safety efforts.
Overall, while the increase in cybercrimes poses a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies, the Andhra Pradesh police are dedicated to enhancing their capabilities through the use of advanced technology and artificial intelligence. By continuing to prioritize public safety and implementing proactive measures, the State aims to create a safer environment for its residents.
