The cybercrime crew behind the theft and resale of over 900 digital tickets to Taylor Swift concerts and other high-demand events on StubHub has been exposed by prosecutors in New York. According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, individuals operating in Jamaica as contractors for the online ticket marketplace were involved in the elaborate scheme.
The perpetrators of this international scam managed to steal the URLs of tickets purchased on StubHub, which were then sent via email to associates in New York. These associates would download the stolen tickets and resell them on StubHub at inflated prices, leading to profits exceeding $600,000 over a period spanning from June 2022 to July 2023, as revealed by prosecutors.
While the majority of the stolen tickets were for Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated Eras Tour, the thieves also targeted tickets for concerts by Adele and Ed Sheeran, NBA games, and the U.S. Open Tennis Championships. Katz mentioned that the investigation is ongoing to determine the full scope of the operation and identify any potential additional accomplices involved in the cybercrime.
Among those apprehended were Tyrone Rose and Shamara Simmons, who were charged with grand larceny, computer tampering, and conspiracy offenses. Rose, aged 20, played a role in redirecting purchased tickets to Simmons, aged 31, and another accomplice in Queens. Following their arrests, Rose and Simmons pleaded not guilty and were released pending their next court appearance on Friday.
Since the discovery of the criminal scheme, StubHub has taken action to address the situation by terminating its relationship with the third-party customer service vendor linked to the theft. The company has also bolstered its security measures and ensured that all ticket orders impacted by the cybercrime have been either replaced or fully refunded.
As the investigation continues, both the prosecution and StubHub are committed to bringing those responsible for the ticket theft to justice and preventing future incidents of fraud within the online ticketing industry. With the collaboration of law enforcement and heightened security measures, efforts are being made to protect consumers and uphold the integrity of ticket sales for popular events.
