The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) director general, Shikha Goel, revealed during an annual press meet that there has been an 18% rise in cybercrime cases this year compared to the previous year. The total amount lost by victims in cybercrimes also saw a significant increase, reaching Rs 1,866 crore this year compared to Rs 778 crore last year.
One of the key takeaways from the report was the increase in the number of FIRs registered this year. In 2023, FIRs were registered in 24,643 cases, a notable increase from 16,339 FIRs in the previous year. Telangana has been recognized as one of the top five states in terms of converting cybercrime complaints into FIRs.

It was highlighted that the focus has shifted towards blocking IMEI numbers to prevent criminals from using devices for illegal activities.
Furthermore, to streamline the process for cyber victims seeking assistance, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau announced the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to improve response times when connecting to the distress phone number, 1930.
The report also mentioned a notable improvement in the refund of victims’ money, with a substantial increase from Rs 8.36 crore in 2023 to Rs 176 crore this year. A total of 1,057 cybercriminals involved in 19,653 cases were apprehended in Telangana, with the TGCSB alone arresting 186 cybercriminals involved in 94 cases.
The efforts to tackle cybercrime in the state have been applauded, with a focus on both preventive measures and swift action against perpetrators. As technology continues to advance, it is imperative for law enforcement agencies to stay ahead of cybercriminals to safeguard the citizens and their digital assets. The use of AI tools and improved coordination among law enforcement agencies will play a crucial role in combating cyber threats effectively.
