On Friday morning, the Federal Administration faced a malicious cyber attack that disrupted its IT systems for approximately 45 minutes. The attack targeted various aspects such as telephony, Outlook, federal websites, and specialist applications. Fortunately, no data breach occurred, as confirmed by the federal government.
The Federal Office of Information Technology and Telecommunications (FOITT) communicated with the media office, informing them about the incident. According to reports from the Keystone-SDA news agency, the attack led to a brief interruption in the Administration’s IT systems. However, prompt action was taken, and the situation was stabilized through effective countermeasures.
The nature of the attack was identified as a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. This type of cyber attack aims to overwhelm websites and applications with a high volume of targeted requests, rendering them inaccessible. Despite the disruption caused by the attack, no sensitive data was compromised during the incident. The FOITT and the Federal Office for Cybersecurity (FOCBS) have collaborated to investigate the attack further and implement necessary security measures to prevent future occurrences.
This recent cyber attack is not an isolated incident, as the Federal Administration has previously been targeted by hackers. During the Ukraine conference held at Bürgenstock NW in June 2024, federal websites experienced overload attacks believed to be orchestrated by pro-Russian hackers, according to the Federal Administration of Civil Services (Bacs).
In response to these cybersecurity threats, the Federal Administration remains vigilant and proactive in enhancing its cyber defenses. The collaboration between different government agencies, such as the FOITT and FOCBS, demonstrates a coordinated effort to address cyber threats effectively and safeguard critical government systems and information.
