Cybersecurity sectors adapt to increased DDoS attack levels

The cybersecurity sector is experiencing a significant shift as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks reach new heights. Andrey Slastenov, Head of Security Department at Gcore, shared the latest insights into the current state of the DDoS protection market and cybersecurity trends in a recent Help Net Security video.

The findings from Q3–Q4 2023 revealed some concerning trends. The maximum attack power rose from 800 Gbps in the first half of 2023 to a staggering 1.6 Tbps. This significant increase in attack power signals a growing threat to businesses and organizations globally.

UDP floods were identified as the most common form of DDoS attacks, constituting 62% of all incidents. Additionally, TCP floods and ICMP attacks remained popular at 16% and 12% respectively. SYN, SYN+ACK flood, and RST Flood collectively accounted for just 10% of the attacks. This distribution highlights the need for robust protection against a variety of attack vectors.

The report also shed light on the industries most targeted by DDoS attacks. Gaming emerged as the most targeted sector, accounting for 46% of all attacks. Financial services, including banks and gambling services, were also heavily targeted, representing 22% of DDoS incidents. The telecom industry rounded out the top three most attacked sectors, with 18% of the total attacks. These findings underscore the need for heightened cybersecurity measures in these industries.

From a geographical perspective, the United States, Indonesia, and The Netherlands were identified as the top three attack source countries. With the USA accounting for 24% of DDoS attacks, businesses operating in these regions should prioritize DDoS protection to mitigate the risk of potential disruptions.

In terms of attack duration, the report revealed that the most extended attack lasted a staggering 9 hours, posing a significant operational and financial risk for targeted organizations. On average, DDoS attacks lasted approximately an hour, emphasizing the need for robust and swift response strategies to mitigate the impact of such incidents.

These findings underscore the evolving and escalating threat landscape that cybersecurity professionals and organizations are facing. The proliferation of DDoS attacks, coupled with the increasing scale and complexity of such incidents, demands a proactive and multi-faceted approach to cybersecurity. With the ongoing digitization of businesses and reliance on online services, the need for resilient DDoS protection measures has never been more critical.
