Organizations across Africa are facing a surge in cyber threats as a result of increasing Internet adoption and digital transformation efforts. This has led to a growing number of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting various countries in the region, particularly those with high Internet penetration rates.
A recent analysis of threat activity data from the first half of 2024 by Netscout revealed a 30% increase in DDoS attacks in the Middle East and Africa compared to the previous quarter. Countries like Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt experienced the largest growth in DDoS attacks during this period.
Morocco, with a 90% Internet penetration rate, reported 61,000 DDoS attacks in the first half of 2024, targeting wireless and wired telecom providers, as well as organizations across multiple industry sectors. Egypt also faced significant DDoS attacks, with wired telecom carriers being the primary targets, followed by wireless carriers and educational institutions.
Tunisia saw 4,511 DDoS attacks in the first six months of 2024, with threat actors deploying varied attack vectors against organizations in the country. This included attacks involving multiple techniques like Apple Remote Management Service, CLDAP, COAP, and DNS amplification, highlighting the sophistication and diversity of cyber threats in the region.
The increase in cyber threats can be attributed to the expansion of online presence by businesses in countries like Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Algeria. Richard Hummel, director of threat intelligence at Netscout, emphasized that while digital transformation brings many benefits, it also expands the attack surface for malicious actors, resulting in disruptions to services and devices.
Geopolitical tensions in the region are also driving cyber activity, with hacktivists targeting critical infrastructure like government services, utilities, and banks to cause maximum disruption. Beyond DDoS attacks, organizations in Africa are facing growing risks of cyber espionage and cybercrime as they embrace digital technologies.
The Africa Center for Strategic Studies highlighted the escalating threats against organizations in Africa due to the rapid spread of IT and communication technologies. Cyber espionage, attacks on critical infrastructure, financially motivated crimes, and supply chain attacks are all posing significant challenges to entities in the region.
Agnidipta Sarkar, vice president and CISO advisory at ColorToken, emphasized the importance of implementing robust defenses against cyber threats as organizations in Africa undergo digital transformation. He predicted that the ability to withstand cyberattacks and promptly report breaches will be critical capabilities sought after by CISOs in the region.
As organizations in Africa navigate the evolving cyber threat landscape, investments in cybersecurity defenses and incident response capabilities are likely to increase to safeguard against the growing risks associated with digital transformation initiatives.
