GitHub, a popular platform for developers, recently made headlines with its announcement about unbundling its GitHub Advanced Security product. This move will see the product split into two standalone offerings: GitHub Secret Protection and GitHub Code Security. The unbundling is scheduled to take effect on April 1.

GitHub Secret Protection is designed to detect and prevent secret leaks before they occur. It will utilize features such as push protection, secret scanning, AI-powered detection, security insights, and more. On the other hand, GitHub Code Security aims to help developers identify and address vulnerabilities more efficiently through code scanning, Copilot autofix, security campaigns, dependency review action, and other tools.

The decision to unbundle GitHub Advanced Security was unveiled on March 4, with the goal of making GitHub’s security solutions more accessible and cost-effective for users. Currently, GitHub Advanced Security provides private repositories with the ability to scan for security vulnerabilities and secrets. The new product offering will not require a GitHub Enterprise subscription, making enterprise-grade security features available to organizations of all sizes as they develop and share code.

This strategic move by GitHub reflects the increasing importance of cybersecurity in the software development process. With cyber threats becoming more sophisticated, it is crucial for developers to have access to robust security tools to protect their code and data. By unbundling GitHub Advanced Security and introducing these two new products, GitHub aims to provide developers with more targeted and effective security solutions.

The unbundling of GitHub Advanced Security also aligns with the platform’s ongoing commitment to innovation and improvement. By offering separate products for secret protection and code security, GitHub is catering to the diverse needs of its user base and ensuring that developers have access to the tools they need to build and deploy secure applications.

Overall, the unbundling of GitHub Advanced Security into GitHub Secret Protection and GitHub Code Security represents a significant evolution in GitHub’s security offerings. With the introduction of these two standalone products, GitHub is poised to empower developers with enhanced security capabilities and support them in creating secure and resilient software applications.
