A recent report from Consumer Reports sheds light on the concerning trend of consumer complacency when it comes to cybersecurity. Despite the growing awareness of cyber threats and the potential for personal information to be stolen, many consumers are failing to take adequate steps to protect themselves online.

The report reveals that nearly half of respondents admitted to being targeted by online scams in the past year, yet very few are actively working to reduce their vulnerability or strengthen their defenses. This lack of proactive behavior is reflected in the stagnant levels of adoption of security tools and practices from 2023 to 2024.

One alarming finding is that only 28% of respondents have identity theft protection services, even though many breached organizations offer this service for free. Additionally, just over half of consumers have software to block or remove malware and viruses on their devices, marking a decline from the previous year. Similarly, the percentage of consumers with a firewall installed has also decreased, with a significant number unsure if they have this essential protection in place.

While there is a slight increase in the number of consumers applying software updates promptly, there is still a significant gap in the implementation of encryption software to safeguard files. Only 10% of respondents reported using encryption, highlighting a glaring vulnerability in data protection practices.

Privacy measures are also lacking among consumers, with many unsure if they have browser extensions that block trackers or if they use a VPN for internet access. These uncertainties indicate a lack of awareness and diligence in protecting personal information online.

Tarah Wheeler, CEO of Red Queen Dynamics, emphasized the importance of staying updated on security measures, stating that it is the most effective way for consumers to safeguard their digital lives. Despite this, the report paints a concerning picture of consumer cyber readiness, indicating a widespread need for improved education and proactive security practices.

The findings of the Consumer Cyber Readiness Report are based on a survey of approximately 4,000 individuals, providing valuable insights into the current state of cybersecurity awareness and practices among consumers. As threats continue to evolve and cybercriminals become more sophisticated, it is essential for individuals to prioritize their online security and take proactive steps to protect their personal information.
