Apple AirTags, a handy tool for tracking personal items, have been the subject of concern due to their potential for unwanted tracking and stalking. To address these issues, Apple has included several anti-stalking protections in the Find My app on iOS, such as unwanted tracking alerts and sound notifications.

One of the key features of Apple’s anti-stalking protections is the ability to receive a pop-up notification on your iPhone if an AirTag not registered to your Apple ID is detected in your vicinity for an extended period. This alert serves as a warning that the AirTag may be tracking you without your consent. By tapping on the notification, users can access the Find My app to view the AirTag’s location and assess the situation.

To aid in physically locating the AirTag, users can make it emit a sound by selecting the “Play Sound” option in the Find My app. This enables the AirTag to chime, making it easier to pinpoint its location if it is hidden in belongings like bags or cars.

For more precise guidance, users with iPhone 11 models and later equipped with the U1 chip can utilize Precision Finding. This feature provides real-time on-screen guidance, showing the direction and distance to the AirTag for enhanced accuracy in locating it, especially in challenging environments.

In the event that an unknown AirTag is discovered, users can tap it with their iPhone or another NFC-enabled phone to access the “Learn About This AirTag” feature. This feature provides valuable information such as the AirTag’s serial number, owner’s contact information, and any lost mode information that may be helpful in determining the purpose of the AirTag, whether it is genuinely lost or used for malicious intent.

If concerns arise about an AirTag being used for tracking, users can disable it by removing the battery. This process involves pressing down on the stainless steel back cover of the AirTag, twisting it counterclockwise to unlock the cover, and removing the battery. Once the battery is removed, the AirTag will cease tracking the user’s location.

For Android users, Apple offers the Tracker Detect app on the Google Play Store, allowing them to scan for nearby AirTags and receive alerts if any unknown AirTags are detected to be traveling with them. By following these steps and utilizing these features, users can protect their privacy and take appropriate action if they encounter an unknown AirTag.

Overall, Apple’s implementation of anti-stalking protections within AirTags aims to provide users with greater control over their privacy and safety when utilizing this tracking device. By leveraging the features and tools available, individuals can mitigate the risks associated with unwanted tracking and ensure a secure tracking experience.
