Developers Recognize Security and other Generative AI Concerns, Still Utilize the Technology

A recent survey conducted by GitLab has highlighted both the concerns and the growing acceptance of generative AI in software development. The survey, which gathered responses from 1,001 individuals in June 2023, revealed that while there were concerns about the risks associated with using generative AI, many developers also acknowledged its usefulness in their projects.

One of the key concerns expressed by respondents was the potential risk to customer data. Around 79% of those surveyed stated that they were worried about AI tools having access to private information or intellectual property. This apprehension can be attributed to the importance of customer data protection. The report also mentioned that privacy, security, and intellectual property emerged as common obstacles faced by developers when implementing AI in the software development lifecycle. In fact, 90% of respondents claimed that they heavily considered privacy and intellectual property protection when making decisions about using AI tools.

Despite these concerns, the survey indicated that AI is gaining momentum in the development landscape. Almost a quarter of respondents (24%) revealed that they were already utilizing AI tools for software development purposes. Furthermore, 64% stated that they had plans to adopt AI within the next two years. This demonstrates a clear acceleration in the adoption of generative AI among developers.

The survey also shed light on the various use cases of AI in programming. Chatbots for natural language assistance in documentation and automated test generation were reported as the most common use cases by 41% of survey respondents. Additionally, developers are actively using AI to generate code change summaries (39%), track machine learning model experiments (38%), and suggest/generate code (36%). This broad range of applications suggests that AI has the potential to support developers in multiple tasks beyond just generating code.

The report emphasized that developers spend only about 25% of their average workday writing code. With AI’s ability to assist with other aspects of the development process such as testing, documentation, maintenance, and vulnerability identification, it becomes clear that AI tools have significant potential to enhance productivity across different stages of software development.

In conclusion, the survey conducted by GitLab highlights the concerns and acceptance surrounding the use of generative AI in software development. While there are concerns about customer data protection, developers are increasingly embracing AI and recognizing its value in various aspects of their work. The survey findings suggest that AI tools have the potential to enhance productivity and support developers in a wide range of tasks beyond just code generation. As technology continues to advance, it will be crucial for developers to carefully consider the risks and benefits associated with AI implementation to ensure the responsible and effective use of this technology.
