In the most recent case, Dalip Singh, a retired colonel from Chandigarh, fell victim to fraudsters who posed as federal law enforcement officials and duped him and his wife out of 34 million rupees over a span of 10 days. The criminals initially contacted Singh via WhatsApp, claiming that his bank account was linked to a money-laundering case involving the now-defunct Jet Airways and its founder Naresh Goyal, who is currently in jail. To further convince Singh of their legitimacy, the fraudsters even showed him a picture of his ATM card and fabricated letters from the Supreme Court.
According to Singh’s police report, the couple was instructed to keep their phones on at all times and stay indoors without contacting anyone during the entire duration of the scam. They were coerced into transferring large sums of money to multiple bank accounts as part of the fraudulent scheme.
