In the realm of machine learning security, there are various stages that bad actors go through to execute an attack on ML systems. These stages involve collecting data, staging the attack, exfiltrating information, and causing a significant impact on the targeted systems. Here, we delve into each stage to understand the intricacies involved in these malicious activities.

The first step in an ML attack is the collection of data. This may involve obtaining ML artifacts, data from information repositories, and data from local systems. The gathered information provides the attackers with insights into the target systems and helps them in planning their strategies for the attack.

Once the information has been collected, the attackers move on to staging the attack. This phase includes creating proxy ML models, backdooring ML models, verifying the attack, and crafting adversarial data. By utilizing proxy ML models, bad actors can simulate attacks offline to perfect their techniques and desired outcomes without raising suspicion. Additionally, they may poison the target model or create adversarial data to manipulate the system in their favor.

After the necessary preparations have been made, attackers proceed to exfiltrate the data they are interested in. This might include stealing ML artifacts, intellectual property, financial information, or other sensitive data related to the ML system. Techniques like exfiltration via ML inference API, cyber means, LLM meta prompt extraction, and LLM data leakage are employed to extract the desired information without alerting the victim organization.

The final stage of an ML attack is the impact phase, where the attackers aim to create havoc or cause damage to the ML systems. This could involve targeting availability, damaging integrity, or disrupting services through various tactics such as evading ML models, denial of ML service, spamming ML systems with chaff data, eroding ML model integrity, cost harvesting, and external harms. Attackers may try to exhaust resources, degrade services, or manipulate data inputs to undermine the trust in the ML models and disrupt the normal functioning of the systems.

Overall, the stages of an ML attack highlight the complex and sophisticated nature of malicious activities targeting machine learning systems. It is essential for organizations to be vigilant and implement robust security measures to safeguard their ML infrastructure from potential threats and breaches. By understanding the tactics and techniques used by attackers at each stage, security practitioners can better prepare and defend against such cyber threats.
