The Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3) has recently welcomed its new Executive Director, Mr. Lesley H. Bernys. Mr. Bernys has a strong background in cybersecurity and law enforcement, having served as the Chief Information Officer and Director of Information Technology Services and Solutions at the Air Force Office of Special Investigations in Quantico, Virginia.
With over two decades of experience in the Department of the Air Force, Mr. Bernys has held various leadership roles, including Special Agent in Charge, Deputy Director of the Office of Special Projects, and Headquarters Special Advisor. He has also worked in policy and leadership positions within the U.S. Senate and U.S. Cyber Command. His educational background includes graduation from the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy.
In his new role as Executive Director of DC3, Mr. Bernys will be overseeing a team of over 500 civilian, military, and contractor personnel who are dedicated to supporting cybersecurity missions across the Department of Defense. As a designated Federal Cybersecurity Center, DC3 provides a range of services, including digital and multimedia forensics, cyber training, technical solutions development, and cyber analytics.
DC3 operates as a Field Operating Agency aligned with the Department of the Air Force Inspector General, providing support to the entire Department of Defense, as well as to interagency and international partners. The center plays a crucial role in cybersecurity, critical infrastructure protection, law enforcement, counterintelligence, and document and media exploitation.
Mr. Bernys takes over the position of Executive Director from Dr. Jude Sunderbruch, who retired in June 2024. His expertise and leadership will be vital in continuing the mission of DC3 and ensuring that the center remains at the forefront of cybersecurity efforts within the Department of Defense and beyond.
