Discord is an online platform that combines traditional forum features with social media and voice chat capabilities. It is a server-based core that allows users to connect with a specific community of people who share common interests. The platform boasts of millions of users, especially among young gamers and enthusiasts. However, with its numerous benefits come some security and privacy risks.

Privacy concerns are one of the most significant challenges for Discord users. As a free service, the platform needs to finance its operations and revenue by selling user data to marketers, making users the product. Discord collects user data in case it is needed later, leaving users exposed to potential data breaches. With over 79% of respondents in a US survey expressing concern over data usage, Discord’s privacy policy raises questions about how well the company is handling user data.

The anonymity offered by Discord presents a unique set of challenges for users who reveal only bits of personal information during discussions. Lurkers or malicious users can exploit this by doxxing other players or releasing identifiable information such as usernames, pictures, and locations. For example, sharing sensitive data about the user’s route or workplace makes the person vulnerable to stalking by cybercriminals.

Cyberbullying is also prevalent on platforms like Discord. Bullies can inundate victims’ accounts with hateful messages or threats. In worst-case scenarios, bullies may coerce users into doing something through blackmail or phishing. Young users below the age of 13 are particularly vulnerable to cyberbullying since they often ignore Discord’s terms of service.

To stay safe on Discord, users should change their online behavior to limit the information they share. Avoid sharing personal data such as location, hometown or travel details that can be used to track the user. A more anonymous approach to protect users can include not using facial images or real names when setting up an account. Users should also exercise caution about clicking any suspicious links or sharing files with unknown people.

In addition, users can fortify their security by equipping their devices with robust security software like ESET Smart Security Premium or ESET Mobile Security to detect and prevent attacks from internet-borne threats. While it may be tempting to use Discord to connect with like-minded people and communities, safety and privacy should always be the top priority. By following the above recommendations, users can avoid potential threats and reap the benefits of exciting conversations.
