The emergence of generative AI has significantly impacted the cyber threat landscape, with experts at Imperva predicting even greater repercussions in 2024. Imperva executives, including Karl Triebes, Lebin Cheng, Peter Klimek, Lynn Marks, and Terry Ray, have emphasized the importance of understanding how attackers are utilizing generative AI technology in order to protect organizations and their valuable data.

Karl Triebes, SVP and General Manager, Application Security at Imperva, envisions a future where the majority of web traffic comes from bots, largely due to generative AI solutions that use automated web crawlers to scrape websites and gather information. Lynn Marks, Senior Product Manager at Imperva, highlights the increasing issue of data scraping as organizations’ data is used to train large learning models for generative AI tools. Triebes also predicts a shift toward AI-based coding in the future, which could benefit new developers but also empower hackers to carry out more sophisticated exploits.

As generative AI technology evolves, it is expected to be used for fraud, enabling fraudsters to impersonate individuals online and carry out social engineering attacks. Ron Bennatan, Imperva Fellow, Data Security, anticipates a rise in attacks as AI is leveraged to deceive victims, emphasizing the need for defenders to invest in AI technology to stay ahead of cybercriminals.

API security is another area that will demand greater attention in 2024, with attackers increasingly targeting API endpoints. Peter Klimek, Director of Technology within the Office of the CTO at Imperva, underscores the need for organizations to improve their API security strategies and defenses to protect valuable data. Lebin Cheng, VP, API Security at Imperva, believes that security leaders will invest in integrated solutions to tackle automated threats targeting APIs and critical applications, ultimately safeguarding data stores.

Moreover, as organizations invest in new technologies and expand their cloud workloads, the approach to data security will evolve in 2024. Dan Neault, SVP and GM of Data Security at Imperva, emphasizes the need for innovative data security technologies to manage data risk effectively. Moshe Lipsker, SVP, Product Development at Imperva, predicts industry consolidation will drive the rise of comprehensive security solutions that empower CISOs to deliver layered protection. Terry Ray, SVP, Data Security GTM and Field CTO at Imperva, expects increased enterprise data asset coverage and improved collaboration among security technologies through consolidation.

In conclusion, the security landscape in 2024 will be shaped by the continued rise of generative AI, increased focus on API security, and evolving approaches to data security. Imperva executives stress the importance of staying informed and proactive in addressing these emerging challenges to protect organizations and their data effectively. It is crucial for organizations to adapt to these changes and invest in advanced security solutions to stay ahead of cyber threats in the evolving digital world.
