A teenager from Walsall, England, was arrested in connection with a cyber online crime group that targeted various companies, including MGM Resorts, as reported by the FBI office in Las Vegas. The arrest took place on Thursday, July 18, by the West Midlands police, with the assistance of the National Crime Agency and the FBI.

The 17-year-old suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, was apprehended on suspicion of blackmail and computer misuse act offenses. Following the arrest, the officers seized multiple digital devices for further forensic examination to gather evidence related to the cyber hacking activities.

This arrest is part of a broader investigation into a large-scale cyber hacking community that has been targeting major organizations worldwide. Detective Inspector Hinesh Mehta, the cyber crime unit manager at ROCUWM, emphasized the impact of ransomware attacks on organizations, highlighting the significant financial losses suffered by victims of such cyber crimes.

The cybersecurity attack on MGM Resorts occurred on September 11, 2023, causing disruptions to some of the company’s systems. In response, MGM Resorts promptly shut down affected systems to safeguard their data. After nearly ten days, the company announced on social media that operations had returned to normal, underscoring their cooperation with law enforcement to combat cyber threats.

A spokesperson from MGM Resorts expressed the company’s commitment to combating cybercriminals by refusing to pay ransom demands and collaborating with law enforcement agencies for investigation and response efforts. This proactive approach sends a strong message to cybercriminals that their actions will not be tolerated and that companies are prepared to take decisive steps to protect their systems and data.

The impact of the cybersecurity attack on MGM Resorts is expected to cost the company more than $100 million, according to a regulatory filing. This financial toll underscores the significant consequences of cyber threats on businesses and the importance of implementing robust cybersecurity measures to mitigate risks.

Overall, the arrest of the teenager in connection with the cyber online crime group targeting MGM Resorts reflects the ongoing efforts to combat cyber threats and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. By collaborating with law enforcement agencies and implementing cybersecurity best practices, organizations like MGM Resorts aim to safeguard their systems and data from malicious cyber activities.
