The FBI recently made a major move in the world of cybercrime by seizing control of BreachForums, a notorious hacking forum that has been a hub for cybercriminal activity for quite some time. In addition to taking down the website itself, the FBI also seized BreachForums’ Telegram channel, effectively shutting down its operations in one fell swoop.

Visitors to the BreachForums website are now greeted with a message stating that the site has been taken over by the FBI and US Department of Justice. The message urges anyone with information about cybercriminal activity on the forum to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. This bold move by the FBI marks a significant victory in the fight against online crime.

The notice on the seized website also includes images of two forum administrators, “Baphomet” and “ShinyHunters,” with prison bars superimposed over their faces. Additionally, logos of law enforcement agencies from various countries, including New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Germany, Iceland, and Ukraine, are displayed on the site. These logos serve as a testament to the international collaboration that took place in bringing down BreachForums.

The seizure of BreachForums comes after a prolonged battle between the forum’s administrators and law enforcement. The forum, which rose to prominence after the takedown of RaidForums, has been under the scrutiny of authorities for more than a year. The founder of BreachForums, Conor Brian Fitzpatrick, was apprehended by law enforcement, prompting the forum to be shut down temporarily amidst concerns that the FBI had gained access to its inner workings.

The FBI’s investigation into BreachForums has been ongoing since June 2023, with the bureau closely monitoring the activities of the forum’s 340,000 members. According to the FBI’s reporting form, BreachForums served as a marketplace for cybercriminals to buy, sell, and trade illegal goods and services, including stolen data, hacking tools, and other contraband. The bureau has called on individuals to come forward with any information they may have that could aid in the investigation of BreachForums.

This latest development serves as a warning to cybercriminals around the world that law enforcement agencies are actively monitoring and taking action against illicit online activities. The takedown of BreachForums is a significant blow to the cybercrime community, demonstrating the effectiveness of international cooperation in combating digital threats. The FBI’s seizure of the forum sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how sophisticated their online operations may be.
