Kaspersky Anticipates a Rise in Varied Cyber Attacks from the Dark Web Market

Cybersecurity provider Kaspersky has made some alarming predictions for the future of cyber attacks on the dark web, anticipating new and more sophisticated strategies in the coming years.

The company has observed a rise in stealers and extortion activities on the dark web market in the past year, signaling a shift towards diverse cyber attack methods. Kaspersky has warned of an increase in crypto-drainer services, heightened promotion of fraudulent websites through search advertising, and a surge in malicious “loaders” in the near future.

Ransomware remains a favored tool for cybercriminals, who have been using it to blackmail companies or showcase successful hacks. The dark web saw a significant increase in posts related to stealer malware in 2023, which is designed to steal sensitive information for identity theft or financial fraud. The volume of various malware log files posted on the dark web also rose by almost 30% in 2023 compared to the previous year.

The number of posts offering Redline stealer logs, a popular malware family, tripled from an average of 370 per month in 2022 to 1,200 in 2023. This indicates a concerning trend of cybercriminals becoming increasingly active and innovative in their approaches.

Looking ahead to 2024, Kaspersky predicts that scammers will increasingly utilize search engine advertising to promote malware-infested websites. Instead of relying solely on phishing emails, cybercriminals are turning to Google and Bing ads to secure top positions in search results for their landing pages embedded with malware.

The company also anticipates a rise in demand for crypto-stealing malware, with increased advertisements in the underground market for such services. Additionally, security experts foresee an increase in services providing antivirus evasion for malware, continued evolution of “loader” malware services, and dynamic changes in the market for Bitcoin mixers and cleaning services. The sustained interest in cryptocurrencies and related digital assets is expected to fuel the proliferation of these trends on the dark web.

Overall, Kaspersky’s predictions paint a grim picture of the future of cybersecurity, with cybercriminals becoming more brazen and innovative in their attack methods. As technology advances, it is clear that the battle against cyber threats will only become more challenging in the coming years. Organizations and individuals must remain vigilant and stay informed about the latest trends and developments in cybersecurity to protect themselves from these evolving threats.
