Cybersecurity experts and former US government officials are sounding the alarm over the potential dismantling of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), warning that such a move would have disastrous consequences for national security.

Michael Daniel, CEO of the Cyber Threat Alliance and a former Special Assistant to President Obama, emphasized the crucial role that CISA plays in defending the country against cyber threats. He argued that decades of effort have gone into establishing an effective cybersecurity defense organization within the US government, and that CISA represents a significant step forward in that regard.

According to Daniel, getting rid of CISA would not only jeopardize national security but also increase the cyber risk faced by the United States. He warned that dismantling the agency would undermine the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure, potentially exposing more Americans to financial losses and even posing a threat to public health and safety.

Chris Painter, a cybersecurity specialist at the State Department and former US government official, echoed Daniel’s sentiments. Painter acknowledged that CISA has experienced some growing pains in its development but stressed the importance of having a civilian agency focused on protecting critical infrastructure. He emphasized the need for CISA to work closely with other federal agencies, including the Department of State, Department of Justice, and Department of Defense, to ensure a comprehensive approach to cybersecurity.

Overall, cybersecurity experts and former government officials are united in their belief that CISA plays a vital role in safeguarding the country against cyber threats. They argue that dismantling the agency would be a shortsighted decision that could have far-reaching consequences for national security and public safety.

It is clear that the debate over the future of CISA is far from over, and the stakes could not be higher. As the cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve and new threats emerge, maintaining a strong and effective defense organization like CISA is essential to protecting the United States against cyber attacks. The potential consequences of dismantling the agency are dire, and policymakers must carefully consider the implications before making any decisions that could compromise the country’s cybersecurity posture.
