PS5 owner warns millions to urgently change setting after hackers take account

PlayStation owners are being reminded of the importance of checking their security settings in order to protect themselves from potential hacking threats. With the rise of cybercriminals, it is crucial for users to take the necessary precautions to keep their accounts safe.

One of the most effective ways to safeguard your PlayStation account is by enabling two-factor authentication. This additional layer of security adds an extra step to the login process by requiring a one-time code in addition to the user’s password. By implementing two-factor authentication, even if a hacker gains access to your password, they would still be unable to log in without the unique code.

Failure to set up two-factor authentication can leave users vulnerable to unauthorized access and potentially fraudulent activity on their accounts. In a worst-case scenario, hackers could lock users out of their own accounts and even enable two-factor authentication themselves, effectively blocking the actual account owner from regaining control.

The significance of this security feature was highlighted in a recent Reddit thread where a user disclosed that their account had been hacked, resulting in the activation of two-factor authentication without their consent. This serves as a cautionary tale for other PlayStation users who may not have taken the necessary steps to secure their accounts.

Sony provides two options for setting up two-factor authentication: using an authenticator app or receiving verification codes via text message. The authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy, generates temporary codes for logging into the PlayStation account. Alternatively, users can opt for the SMS verification method, which involves receiving a code via text message.

To activate two-factor authentication on a PS5, users should navigate to Settings, then select Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification. From there, they can choose to set up an authenticator app or SMS verification, depending on their preference. If using an authenticator app, the user must scan a QR code displayed on the TV screen with the app on their phone. For SMS verification, users will need to enter their mobile number and input the verification code received via text message.

In addition to enabling two-factor authentication, it is also recommended to keep a record of the backup codes provided. These codes can be used as a backup method for logging in if the primary authentication method is unavailable.

By taking these simple yet crucial steps, PlayStation owners can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to hacking attempts and protect the security of their valuable accounts. With cyber threats constantly evolving, it is essential for users to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their online accounts.
