The R00TK1T ISC CyberTeam is Accused of Hacking into the Egyptian Ministry

R00TK1T ISC CyberTeam, a notorious hacktivist collective, has once again made headlines by claiming responsibility for a major breach at the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade in Egypt. The group announced their successful infiltration into the ministry’s systems, providing alleged evidence of their access to highly secure networks. This bold declaration follows previous announcements by R00TK1T ISC, including their intention to target the BreachForums and the subsequent closure of their official Telegram channel.

After citing security considerations, the group has moved back to operating in secrecy, relying solely on their private data channel for communication of their activities. Despite the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade breach claims made by R00TK1T ISC, The Cyber Express attempted to verify the intrusion by reaching out to the Egyptian ministry. However, communication difficulties hindered direct contact with the ministry, leaving the claims unconfirmed.

The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade website appears to be operational and shows no immediate signs of intrusion. Screenshots shared by the threat actor reveal documents purportedly pilfered through the breach. In a statement regarding the breach, the threat actor boasted, “We have successfully hacked into The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade in Egypt, showcasing our deep infiltration into their systems.”

Meanwhile, on January 30, 2024, R00TK1T ISC CyberTeam targeted Malaysia’s digital infrastructure in a separate incident, underscoring the global impact of their malicious activities. The group’s claim of accessing sensitive information from prominent companies like L’Oreal and Qatar Airways highlights the sophistication and persistence of cyber threats faced by businesses worldwide.

In Egypt, the corporate sector has seen a rise in ransomware attacks in recent weeks, posing a significant risk to businesses across various industries. This escalating threat underscores the urgent need to enhance cybersecurity measures to mitigate potential damages. Amid ongoing political and security challenges in the Middle East, Egyptian businesses remain prime targets for cyberattacks, with ransomware being a prevalent threat. The repercussions of such attacks, including data loss and reputational harm, emphasize the critical necessity of robust defense mechanisms against cyber threats.

The Cyber Express would like to clarify that this report is based on internal and external research gathered through various sources. As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve and become more sophisticated, organizations must remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their systems and data against malicious actors like R00TK1T ISC CyberTeam. With the increasing frequency and severity of cyberattacks, bolstering defenses and implementing robust security measures is crucial to protect against potential breaches and their detrimental impacts.
