The upcoming report by the United Nations is set to reveal the results of an investigation into North Korean cyberattacks on cryptocurrency companies. According to an advanced copy of the report obtained by Reuters, the UN investigators have identified 58 specific cyberattacks believed to have been sponsored by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), which potentially generated around $3 billion to fund the country’s illicit nuclear program. The cyberattacks were allegedly carried out to circumvent international sanctions imposed on the DPRK’s authoritarian regime.

The panel conducting the investigation has been looking into cyberattacks on cryptocurrency-related companies between 2017 and 2023. These attacks are estimated to have generated approximately $3 billion, which reportedly was used to fund the DPRK’s development of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). This raises concerns about the DPRK’s ability to use illicit means to finance its prohibited nuclear activities.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has been under strict UN Security Council sanctions since 2006 due to its nuclear and missile activities. These sanctions are aimed at curbing the country’s ability to further develop its nuclear capabilities and deter its aggressive behavior on the international stage.

The UN report, which is expected to be published in the coming weeks, will shed light on new trends in North Korean state-sponsored hacking. This will include an examination of increased collaboration between threat groups, targeting of the defense sector, and supply chains. These findings are likely to raise concerns about the evolving tactics and capabilities of North Korean cyber threat actors.

The report will provide valuable insights into the methods and motivations of North Korean cyberattacks, contributing to a better understanding of the growing threat posed by the DPRK in the cyber domain. It will also serve as a catalyst for discussions on how the international community can work together to address and mitigate the risks posed by North Korean cyber operations.

The investigation’s findings are expected to prompt further action by the international community to address the issue of state-sponsored cyberattacks. This may include diplomatic efforts to hold the DPRK accountable for its activities, as well as measures to strengthen cybersecurity defenses in the face of evolving cyber threats.

In conclusion, the upcoming UN report on North Korean cyberattacks is poised to serve as a wake-up call for the international community. By shining a light on the DPRK’s illicit activities in the cyber domain, the report will underscore the urgent need for concerted action to address the growing threat posed by North Korean cyber operations. The findings of the investigation will likely prompt renewed efforts to strengthen cybersecurity defenses and hold the DPRK accountable for its actions.
