Fortinet Observes Rapid Growth of On-Prem SASE Market Compared to Cloud Solutions

Enterprises Demand Processing of Sensitive Data Within Their Own Infrastructure

In a recent assessment, Fortinet has highlighted a significant shift among enterprises toward preferring on-premises Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solutions over traditional cloud-based services. This trend is primarily driven by the increasing volume of data traffic generated by artificial intelligence (AI) applications, coupled with heightened demands for data sovereignty and security.

The Landscape of Data Processing

According to Fortinet, the desire for on-premises solutions is reshaping the market dynamics of enterprise data management. With the rise of AI generating vast amounts of data, organizations are seeking ways to manage these data streams more effectively within their corporate networks and data centers. Cloud security systems can sometimes prove inadequate and inefficient for inspecting and managing these extensive flows of data. Consequently, businesses are looking for greater control over how and where their sensitive data is processed.

Ken Xie, co-founder and CEO of Fortinet, mentioned during an earnings call that enterprises are actively pursuing what he termed "sovereign SASE." He indicated that organizations that have previously relied heavily on cloud services are now recognizing the greater advantages of on-premises solutions for their data traffic management. This shift is forecasted to create a substantial market opportunity for both enterprises and service providers.

Innovations in SASE Technology

Fortinet has been proactive in promoting its SASE firewall, a versatile solution that provides organizations the flexibility to enforce security policies across three essential areas: locally, at the network edge, and in the cloud. This convergence of security features enables businesses to protect users, applications, and sensitive data across various environments, thereby enhancing overall security.

Christiane Ohlgart, Fortinet’s CFO, described the SASE firewall as the next evolutionary step in network security architecture. "This solution natively combines firewall, SASE, and hybrid mesh capabilities," she explained. Rather than routing high volumes of internal traffic to the cloud for processing, the firewall allows for local inspection and enforcement of security measures while maintaining seamless integration for outbound traffic.

Real-World Adoption Examples

Fortinet’s emerging dominance in the on-premises SASE market is underscored by significant investment from various sectors. For instance, a prominent global pharmaceutical company recently invested seven figures in Fortinet’s on-premises SASE solution to localize the processing of confidential medical data while also maintaining a cloud-based infrastructure for its geographically diverse workforce. This transition was aimed at replacing an existing cloud-delivered security service lacking on-premises software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) capabilities.

Ohlgart pointed out that what set Fortinet apart in this particular scenario was its unified architecture and integrated platform approach. Companies seeking to maintain stringent data privacy while achieving improved performance and visibility are increasingly moving toward hybrid security solutions, especially in situations where cloud-based SASE falls short of their operational needs.

AI and Network Security Infrastructure

The explosion of AI-generated traffic is further propelling enterprises toward upgrading their security infrastructure. According to Fortinet, research shows that bot activity is beginning to outpace human-generated traffic for the first time, emphasizing the need to secure AI-related data effectively. Xie explained that enterprises are recognizing the necessity for enhanced network segmentation to support the demands of AI workloads.

In one noteworthy instance, Fortinet secured an eight-figure deal from a new cloud service provider that required robust security for its AI data centers. This case exemplifies the current market trend where organizations are increasingly turning toward specialized security solutions, reflecting a wider pivot in enterprise attitudes towards data processing and management.

The Forecast of the SASE Market

Xie indicated that the on-premises SASE market is likely two to three times larger than the existing cloud-only solutions. This projection highlights the significant potential for growth driven by the increased demand for sovereign and private SASE solutions. As organizations continue to navigate the complexities of data privacy and security, the need for hybrid protection becomes ever more apparent, especially in emerging sectors like AI security and quantum technologies, with Fortinet estimating that this presents a $172 billion opportunity over the next four years.

Fortinet’s Remarkable Financial Performance

In conjunction with these developments, Fortinet has also reported impressive financial growth, with revenues reaching $2.05 billion in the quarter ending June 30, a notable increase from $1.63 billion during the same period the previous year, translating to a remarkable 25.6% year-over-year growth. Their non-GAAP earnings exceeded analysts’ expectations, further boosting investor confidence. Following the earnings announcement, Fortinet’s stock surged to an all-time high, reflecting the market’s optimistic outlook for its future performance.

In summary, the evolving landscape of data management and security is prompting enterprises to prioritize on-premises solutions that offer more control and effective management of sensitive data, thanks to the convergence of networking and security necessitated by the rise of AI technologies. As organizations adapt, Fortinet’s innovations in SASE technology position it favorably to capitalize on this growing demand.
