The annual FOSDEM megaconference in Brussels is a gathering like no other, attracting thousands of software and hardware enthusiasts from all over Europe. With free admission, attendees come together to discuss, showcase, and celebrate open-source technology over a fun-filled weekend.

This year, FOSDEM 2025 showcased an abundance of hardware-related projects, taking center stage alongside the software offerings. From Jenkins clusters running on single board computers to smartphones demoing various phone operating systems, the event was a paradise for hardware enthusiasts. The presence of SteamDecks, FreeCAD installations, and a variety of single board computers added a tangible element to the otherwise intangible world of software.

Notable projects like PostmarketOS, CalyxOS, and FuriLabs displayed their innovations, while organizations like KiCad, FreeCAD, and the Libre Space Foundation showcased a collaborative approach to hardware development. The emergence of high-level languages for microcontrollers, LoRa devices, and SDR setups highlighted the diverse range of hardware technologies present at FOSDEM.

Among the exciting exhibits were demonstrations of open-source smart home systems, open-source game engines on SteamDecks, and impromptu showcases of creator’s projects. The event also saw the absence of the Pine64 stand, but Pine64 representatives were still actively engaging with attendees.

Attendees were treated to a plethora of engaging activities, from exploring the latest hardware advancements to networking with like-minded individuals. The FOSSAsia LED matrix name badge emerged as a popular accessory, offering a unique way to connect with others at tech events.

As FOSDEM 2025 drew to a close, the anticipation for FOSDEM 26 began to build. With a rich history of fostering collaboration and innovation in the open-source community, FOSDEM continues to be a must-visit event for software and hardware enthusiasts alike.

For those eager to delve deeper into the FOSDEM experience, past coverage and post-event blog posts offer insights into the inner workings of the conference and the seamless integration of various open-source projects. As FOSDEM remains a beacon for open software celebration in Europe, attendees can look forward to another exciting gathering in the future.
