Foxit Software has taken proactive measures to address critical security concerns by issuing updates for its popular PDF solutions, Foxit PDF Reader and Foxit PDF Editor. The updates, which were released on December 17, 2024, are aimed at addressing vulnerabilities that could potentially expose users to remote code execution (RCE) attacks.

The vulnerabilities in question are related to Use-After-Free flaws in the handling of certain elements within the PDF software, such as AcroForms, checkbox objects, and 3D page objects. Exploiting these vulnerabilities could allow malicious actors to remotely execute arbitrary code on a victim’s system, posing a significant security risk. The flaws were discovered and reported by security researchers Mat Powell of Trend Micro Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) and KPC of Cisco Talos, who highlighted the underlying issues of improper memory validation, including the use of wild or null pointers. If exploited, these vulnerabilities could result in application crashes or even enable attackers to take control of affected systems.

It is important to note that these vulnerabilities specifically impact Foxit PDF Reader and Editor software on Windows operating systems. While there have been no reported incidents of active exploitation in the wild, the severity of these flaws underscores the importance of immediate action. Users are strongly urged to update their software to the latest versions to mitigate these security risks.

To update the software, users running Version 2023.1 or higher can navigate to the “Help” menu within Foxit PDF Reader or Editor and select “About Foxit PDF Reader” or “About Foxit PDF Editor.” From there, users can click on “Check for Update” to install the latest version. For users of Version 13 of Foxit PDF Editor, a similar process can be followed. Alternatively, users can download the updated versions directly from Foxit’s official website to ensure they are running the most secure and stable release of the software.

Given the potential for attackers to exploit these vulnerabilities and execute remote code, updating Foxit applications is crucial in safeguarding against cyber threats. Keeping software up to date is one of the most effective ways to enhance security posture and protect against potential risks.

In conclusion, Foxit Software’s prompt response to addressing these critical security vulnerabilities demonstrates their commitment to maintaining the integrity of their products and protecting users from potential security risks. By staying vigilant and ensuring software is regularly updated, users can bolster their defenses against evolving cyber threats and mitigate the risk of exploitation.
