Google introduces end-to-end email encryption for Gmail

Google Workspace is introducing a new feature that provides users with more control over their email communications. The restricted view option allows administrators to enforce a setting where emails are not automatically decrypted upon arrival in a recipient’s inbox. This added layer of security ensures that sensitive information is not downloaded locally on third-party servers or devices.

While this restricted view setting is not mandatory for all Gmail users, organizations have the ability to enable it for everyone to enhance security measures. By requiring authentication with an approved account and identity provider, administrators can easily manage access and apply additional security protocols as needed. Google compares this experience to sharing a document on Google Drive, where the user remains in complete control of who can view the information.

Julien Duplant, product manager at Google Workspace, explains that this approach offers a more robust encryption protection for email communications. Regardless of the recipient or their email provider, messages sent through the restricted view feature will be encrypted, with the user having sole control over access. This means that there is only one set of keys, and the user is the only one with authorization to unlock the encrypted message.

With the increasing concerns over data privacy and security, this new feature aims to provide organizations with a heightened level of protection for their sensitive communications. By implementing the restricted view option, businesses can have peace of mind knowing that their emails are secure and only accessible to authorized individuals.
