Google has introduced a new initiative called the Global Signal Exchange (GSE), aimed at enhancing the detection and prevention of online scams and fraud. Despite already blocking millions of fraudulent activities daily, Google recognizes the importance of collaboration in fighting against scams.
Amanda Storey, senior director of trust and safety, and Nafis Zebarjadi, product manager of account security at Google, emphasized the necessity of working together with industry partners, businesses, civil society, and governments to combat malicious actors and safeguard users. Their announcement of the GSE project signals Google’s commitment to addressing the ongoing threat of scams in the online realm.
In collaboration with the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) and DNS Research Federation, Google is launching GSE to leverage the expertise and resources of these organizations. GASA’s extensive network and DNS Research Federation’s data platform, with over 40 million fraud signals, will be integral to the success of the project. Google is providing the funding for GSE’s launch and plans to host the centralized data engine on Google Cloud for optimal efficiency.
Participants in the GSE initiative will have the opportunity to share and receive signals while utilizing artificial intelligence to detect patterns and identify fraudulent activities. GASA and the DNS Research Federation will oversee access for qualifying organizations, ensuring that the exchange of information is secure and effective.
During a pilot program, GSE successfully shared over 100,000 URLs associated with fraudulent merchants and received approximately 1 million signals in return. The initial focus will be on sharing flagged Google Shopping URLs known to be scams, with plans to expand to include data from other product areas in the future. By streamlining the process of sharing abuse signals through a centralized platform, GSE aims to expedite the detection and disruption of fraudulent activities across different sectors and platforms.
