Operation Synergia, a major international collaboration targeting cybercrimes, has achieved significant success in curbing global cyber threats. The initiative, spearheaded by Group-IB in partnership with INTERPOL and law enforcement agencies from over 50 INTERPOL member countries, ran from September to November 2023.

During the three-month-long operation, Group-IB’s team made substantial progress in identifying and neutralizing cyber threats. More than 500 IP addresses hosting phishing resources and over 1,900 IP addresses associated with ransomware, Trojans, and banking malware operations were identified. This critical information led to the apprehension of 31 individuals, along with the identification of an additional 70 suspects. Moreover, hundreds of command-and-control servers worldwide were taken down as a result of the collaborative efforts.

Law enforcement agencies from over 50 countries, including Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and Singapore, played a pivotal role in acting on the information provided by Group-IB. They successfully dismantled a significant number of servers, with the Hong Kong Police dismantling 153 servers, and the Singapore Police dismantling 86 servers. As a result, 70% of the identified command-and-control servers were neutralized, effectively disrupting cybercriminal operations hosted in these countries.

Bernardo Pillot, Assistant Director to INTERPOL Cybercrime Directorate, commended the collective efforts of the operation, emphasizing the commitment to safeguarding the digital space. He highlighted the significance of dismantling the infrastructure behind phishing, banking malware, and ransomware attacks in order to protect the digital ecosystems and ensure a safer online experience for all.

The involvement of 60 law enforcement agencies from over 50 INTERPOL member countries underscored the united front against transnational cybercrime. The collaboration between public and private sectors, as demonstrated by Operation Synergia, was crucial in curbing the growth and professionalization of cybercrime.

Dmitry Volkov, CEO and co-founder of Group-IB, emphasized the paramount role of global cooperation in combatting cybercrime. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and effective data sharing in reducing the global impact of cyber threats.

The success of Operation Synergia reaffirms the essentialness of international cooperation in addressing cyber-related challenges. It serves as a precedent for future endeavors, showcasing the strength of partnerships between public and private sectors in securing the world’s digital future. The commitment to advancing effective collaboration and data sharing remains a priority for Group-IB and its partners.
