A 21-year-old university student named Amar Tagore has been sentenced to 21 months in jail for his involvement in creating malware that targeted government websites while residing at his parents’ home. Tagore reportedly earned nearly £45,000 by selling malicious software to individuals looking to disrupt both corporate and state-run websites.

The illegal activities came to light when a Jobcentre website in Braintree, Essex, experienced a series of cyber attacks over a three-month period from May to August 2022. The police were alerted to these attacks, prompting an investigation into the source of the malware.

Tagore, who hails from West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, ultimately admitted to committing a computer misuse offense and violating laws related to the proceeds of crime. His guilty plea served as a key piece of evidence in the case against him, leading to a swift conviction.
