Hackers Demand $10 Million Ransom

The recent cyberattack on Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has caused significant disruptions to its digital systems, prompting hackers to demand a ransom of US$10 million. The attack, which took place in late March 2025, was confirmed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during his speech at the 218th Police Day celebration in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Prime Minister Anwar, the cyberattack on MAHB occurred “a day or two ago,” with hackers demanding a substantial sum of money. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Anwar assured the public that the government would not give in to the hackers’ demands. Instead, he emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing Malaysia’s cybersecurity defenses by allocating additional resources to combat future cyber threats.

The details of the MAHB cyberattack and the government’s response have raised concerns among the public and officials. Former Wangsa Maju MP, Wee Choo Keong, expressed alarm on social media after noticing disruptions at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2. Reports indicated that flight information displays were affected, leading to manual updates on whiteboards to manage arrival and departure details.

Social media users also shared accounts of check-in counters and baggage handling systems being impacted by a reported 10-hour outage. However, despite these accounts, neither MAHB nor the Ministry of Transport issued an official statement regarding the cyberattack at the time of writing.

The lack of an official response has led to speculation that the cyberattack on MAHB may be part of a larger trend of cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure globally. In Malaysia, concerns over vulnerabilities in the country’s digital systems have been on the rise. The MAHB data breach is the latest incident to highlight the necessity for stronger cybersecurity measures to safeguard vital infrastructure.

As the investigation into the cyberattack continues, authorities are working to address the vulnerabilities within the country’s digital infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing threat of cyberattacks and the importance of investing in robust cybersecurity defenses to protect against potential threats.
