In a significant development, the state of Haryana has witnessed a staggering three-fold increase in cybercrime arrests over the past year. The numbers speak volumes, with a dramatic rise from 1,900 arrests in 2023 to a whopping 5,156 arrests in 2024. This surge in arrests reflects the growing threat of cybercrime in the state and the proactive efforts being taken to combat it.
Alongside the increase in arrests, cyber fraud cases have also seen a sharp rise in Haryana. In 2023, reported cyber frauds amounted to Rs 602 crore, a figure that escalated to Rs 980 crore in 2024. Despite this alarming trend, there has been a silver lining in the form of preventive measures. Significant progress has been made in preventing cybercrimes, resulting in savings of around Rs 76 crore in 2023 and a considerable increase to ₹268 crore in 2024.
The recent findings were disclosed during a high-profile conference attended by DSPs, ASPs, cyber police station in-charges, and cyber investigation officers from various parts of the state. The conference served as a platform for in-depth discussions on technical aspects and best practices for combating cybercrime. Officers engaged in detailed dialogues to address the challenges and nuances associated with tackling cyber threats effectively.
DGP Shatrujeet Kapoor, in his address at the conference, commended the dedicated efforts of law enforcement agencies in Haryana in combating cybercrime. He noted the recognition received by the state, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah conferring the prestigious Best-1930 Cyber Team Award in September 2024. This accolade underscores the commitment and expertise demonstrated by Haryana in curbing cyber threats.
Currently, Haryana Police works closely with 15 nodal officers from 10 banks to strengthen the fight against cybercrimes. In a forthcoming development, nodal officers from SBI will also join this collaborative effort. These bank officials provide round-the-clock support to law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the significance of a cohesive and unified approach to combat cyber threats effectively.
SP, Cybercrime, Amit Dahiya shed light on the modus operandi employed by cybercriminals for fraudulent activities and the technical intricacies of investigations. He delved into vital tools such as the I4C Coordination Portal, M-Kavach mobile app, antivirus solutions, and other essential resources. Additionally, Dahiya highlighted critical aspects including RBI guidelines, social engineering crimes, digital arrests, investment frauds, cryptocurrency frauds, international fraud calls, coordination portals, and collaboration with bank nodal officers.
