In August 2024, security researchers uncovered a new piece of macOS malware known as the “Cthulhu Stealer.” This malicious software, available to cybercriminals for as little as $500 per month, masquerades as legitimate programs like Grand Theft Auto IV or CleanMyMac in order to deceive users into downloading and installing it on their systems. Once installed, the Cthulhu Stealer tricks users into entering sensitive information, which is then sent directly to the attackers.

What sets Cthulhu Stealer apart is its resemblance to another malware strain called “Atomic Stealer.” This similarity suggests that the developers behind Cthulhu Stealer may have repurposed code from the Atomic Stealer malware to create their malicious tool. By reusing code from existing malware, cybercriminals can expedite the development process and quickly deploy new threats to target unsuspecting users.

The emergence of Cthulhu Stealer underscores the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals to compromise the security of macOS users. While adware and ransomware have been mainstays in the world of Mac malware, the shift towards information-stealing malware poses a significant threat to users’ privacy and security. With the ability to collect sensitive data from infected systems, malicious actors can exploit this information for various nefarious purposes, ranging from identity theft to financial fraud.
