The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked concerns about the potential for creating fake Aadhaar cards using AI tools. Aadhaar, a unique 12-digit identity number issued by the Government of India, is a crucial document for all Indian citizens, regardless of age. From school admissions to bank accounts, government schemes, and ticket bookings, Aadhaar is a requirement for various services.
Cybercriminals are now taking advantage of AI technology to produce Aadhaar-like fake identity documents, leading authorities and cybersecurity experts to warn the public to stay vigilant.
Artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and advanced image generators have gained popularity, especially after features like “Jibli image” gained attention. While these tools have many benefits, they are also being misused. A LinkedIn user recently showcased how an Aadhaar card can be fabricated using ChatGPT, raising concerns about data misuse and security threats.
As Aadhaar is associated with biometric and demographic data, the use of fake cards could pose significant risks if used for accessing government benefits or engaging in illegal activities.
Despite their realistic appearance, fake Aadhaar cards created using AI often exhibit distinct signs that differentiate them from genuine cards. Common indicators of fake cards include blurry or altered photos, unusual fonts and layouts, distorted logos, and discrepancies in the QR code. Genuine Aadhaar cards have clear, high-quality photos, consistent fonts, precise alignments, and accurate logos.
To verify the authenticity of an Aadhaar card, individuals can visit the official UIDAI portal and enter their 12-digit Aadhaar number and captcha. The portal confirms whether the Aadhaar is valid. Additionally, for added security, individuals can generate a 16-digit Virtual ID (VID), a temporary number that can be used instead of the actual Aadhaar number. Only the cardholder can generate a VID, providing an extra layer of identity protection during transactions or authentication.
It is essential for individuals to remain cautious and vigilant against the misuse of AI technology in creating fake Aadhaar cards. By being aware of the signs of a fake card and utilizing online verification tools such as the UIDAI portal and Virtual ID, individuals can protect themselves from potential fraud and identity theft. The authorities continue to emphasize the importance of safeguarding personal information and staying informed about cybersecurity threats in the age of AI.
